Health Check

CCM Solutions can offer fixed price Oracle Health Check services that can provide you with a detailed overview of the state of your Oracle environments.

A typical review would produce a report broken down into the following subsections:

Server:

  • Review of overall system configuration
  • Statistical analysis of operating system performance
  • Statistical analysis of system i/o throughput
  • Statistical analysis of system memory utilisation
  • Review and recommendations relating to Operating System configuration and setup (if applicable)

Oracle:
  • Review of overall Oracle configuration
  • Statistical analysis of Oracle performance
  • Detailed structural report of the database
  • Review and recommendations relating to database specific initialisation parameters and settings (if applicable)

Backup:
  • Review of overall backup architecture in place
  • Review and recommendations relating to backup policies and techniques currently in place

Business Continuity:
  • Review of current Business Continuity model (if applicable)
  • Review and recommendations of current Business Continuity capability against identified business requirements

In addition to the general health check service, we can provide assistance in the health-checking and troubleshooting of applications and application related performance problems.
Here are some recent examples:
  • A client's financial markets report was taking in excess of 6 hours to run on a powerful AIX system with Oracle 8.1.7.4. The application Health Check showed that a single query within the report was making over 15 million i/o requests to return around 200 rows of data. By rewriting the query we reduced the reports execution time from 6 hours to 8 seconds.

  • A client's backup processes were reviewed and revealed that they were using database exports as their only means of backing a Solaris system with Oracle 8.1.7.0. We immediately advised the client to take a cold backup and implemented a 'hot' backup process for them. As part of the subsequent action plan produced, we updated the clients Operating System and database software to the latest available patch levels and implemented RMAN based backups.

  • An online trading systems performance was being impacted by a key report that was taking in excess of 14 hours to run. By identifying high levels of scan activity on key objects an additional index was added and the query completed in less than 2 minutes.
